Several reasons: To treat an unstable or potentially unstable spine fracture. For certain deformities ie. Scoliosis that may have become large or show they will progress to be large need fusions. Certain instabilities that occur that can be treated most of the time nonop but occasionally need fusion since they don't respond. Sometimes during a spine surgery for other issues a lot of bone removed & fusion needed.
