Otoplasty explained: Otoplasty is an external ear surgery that reshapes the ears. In typical procedure, missing folds in the prominent ear are refined and the ear is set back closer to the head. This is a safe and commonly performed operation. I hope this information is helpful. Stephen weber, M.D. Lone tree facial plastic surgeon.

Ear pinning: Otoplasty means to shape the ears. What is done depends on the problem. Most commonly the ears protrude at the top because a natural bend in the cartilage never formed. By removing a small amount of skin on the back of the ear the cartilage can be retrieved and through scoring and placement of nylon stitches reshaped to a more normal appearance. Rarely, excess cartilage can also be removed.

AKA Ear Pinning: Prominent ears protrude due to 2 main issues. The top of the ear lacks an "antihelical fold" which is the curved cartilage paralleling the upper rim of the ear. The bottom of the ear can protrude, because the "bowl" of the ear" just before the ear canal, is overly large. Otoplasty: a crease incision behind the ear, "bending" the cartilage at the top, +/-"tacking" the bowl down & back.
