Risks: If done right it will have little risks. Sometimes you get capsular contracture(hard capsule around the implant) or asymmetry and somtimes implant problems.

Vary: There are multiple risks and benefits for every surgery and breast augmentation is no different. Consult with a board certified plastic surgeon to review your specific concerns.

Implants are safe!: Most of the complications with breast augmentation come from poorly-performed surgery, often by non-plastic surgeons, or ps who only do a minimal number per year. Most of the "bad" statistics are woefully overstated for abps-certified ps who do a hundred or more ba per year, and do so with very minimal risk of any problems. Most common reason for re-operation: still too small. See experienced ps!

Minimal: Most surgeons who perform this procedure with frequency have few significant complications. The most common issues include altered feeling, capsular contracture (hardening), hematoma (bleeding), and asymmetry. Your surgeon should be able to tell you his/her statistics with regards to these complications. Your surgeon should perform at least 100 per year and have hospital privileges.

Follow up is key: The long term risks of breast implants are the need for follow up. The primary danger is neglecting them. Implants are very simple machines, essentially inflatable bladders which can fail. As a foreign body, they present the same risks as many other implants with scarring or infection. When any of these situations occur, treatment should promptly follow with relatively few long term consequence.

Two types: One group of risks has to do with the surgery itself - the risk of bleeding, infection, ugly scars, numbness. The other group of risks has to do with the implant - deflation or leakage, rippling, tissue stretch, hardness, need for replacement and follow-up imaging. Speak to a board-certified plastic surgeon about this for more details than i can give in 400 characters!
