Swelliong: A bulge or swelling around a colostomy or ileostomy can represent a hernia defect. A hernia is a hole in the abdominal wall around the stoma, allowing internal structures or intestines to bulge out around the stoma. May need to be surgically repaired if causing symptoms, discomfort, or if it is enlarging.

Parastomal hernia: While there is still no "standard" approach, most experts agree that a laparoscopic sugarbaker technique is best. Moving the stoma to another sight usually fails, and leaves the patient with a new parastomal hernia, a hernia at the old site, and an incisional hernia.
