Two approaches: Firstly, it is essential to protect the foot( especially an insensate or numb foot) from abnormal stress and pressure to pevent ulcers and/or fractures. Shoes and inserts designed to do this are prescribed. Sometimes neuropathy can cause significant pain or discomfort in extremities. Medications or certain vitamins may be prescribed which may help in these instances. Consult with physicians.

Educate yourself: Cut down on the sugar and salt. Cut down on the crabs (rice potatoes, bread) as they get converted to sugar. You may want to use alternative sweeteners. See a nutritionist. Make a change in your lifestyle now as many of the complications of diabetes are preventable. There are various causes of peripheral neuropathy. Have it evaluated and treated.

Good control: It becomes very important to control the underlying condition and co existing condition. Peripheral neuropathy due to diabetes is related to its control and is a long term complication. So prevent it by getting good control of diabetes and BP to prevent other complications but if dia betic neuropathy sets in you can use meds approved for this condition like neurontin, cymbalta, (duloxetine) carbamezaprin.Lyrica.
