A member asked:

Daughter had cyst. should she have to have this dermoid removed, is it dangerous?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes/Could be.: This is a teratoma, or dermoid cyst. It is called this because it has elements of embryonal development in it, notably the skin, hence dermoid cyst. It can also have other things like teeth, hair, and other tissues in it. It itself is benign, and is treated by complete surgical removal. If it is not fully removed, or if ruptured with spillage, or near the spinal cord, complications can arise.
