Yes: A child, or an adult, can die from an overdose of pain medicines before surgery, after surgery, or having nothing to do with surgery. However, if a child has been properly prescribed pain medications by a competent physician, and you are giving the prescribed amount at the prescribed interval, then the risk is almost nonexistent.
