Lower glycemic index: To minimize the spike in blood sugar when eating fruit, a patient with dm might consider those with more fiber and less sugar- berries and cantaloupe, for example. Starchy and very sweet fruit like banana, mango will cause more of that spike. Better also to eat an apple with rather than w/o the peel. Eating the fruit rather than juice also provides more fiber and somewhat lower spike.
