A member asked:

Is prozac (fluoxetine) also affective for gad as well along with ocd. if there is confusion whether a person has ocd or gad when not easy to distinguish?

Yes: I would add that too much prozac, (fluoxetine) which can be very powerful, can cause anxiety as one of the side-effects. Low doses of the ssris can help for gad, whereas often higher doses are required for resolutions of the symptoms for sufferers of ocd. Buspirone is a medication which is indicated for gad and sometimes is added to Prozac (fluoxetine) and the other ssris to help further. Good luck.

Prozac: Prozac has FDA indications for Major Depressive Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, Bulimia Nervosa, Panic Disorder & Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. It is used off-label by physicians to treat generalized anxiety disorder. It is usually not difficult to distinguish the two diagnoses. Higher doses of prozac are usually needed for treatment of OCD.
