Median nerve palsy: Numbness of the thumb region can be caused by pressure and swelling that affects the median nerve at the wrist of base of the thumb. This usually causes numbness in the palm of the hand mostly thumb and forefinger. Similar symptoms develop with carpal tunnel syndrome. Immobilizing, rest, and anti-inflammatory medications will help.
