Saving cord blood: After the delivery of the baby and the cord is clamped and cut, there is residual blood left in the placenta and cord. This blood is full of stem cells which we use to treat certain diseases. We collect this blood and the bank separates out the stem cells and keeps them in case you or your family needs them later. There is also public banking that saves the cells for anyone who needs them.

Save umbilical blood: Cord blood banking refers to umbilical cord blood. The umbilical cord that is attached to the placenta after a birth contains bone marrow forming stem cells that can be used to perform a stem cell transplant. Cord blood banking refers to saving these cells and freezing them for use in the future. There are cord blood banks that use donated cord blood for patients in need of a transplant.

Is cord blood banking worth the cost?

Dr. Martin Rubenstein
Hematology and Oncology 45 years experience
Probably not.: Tissue banks will charge you money to store the cord blood cells of your baby. These cells include stem cells that could be used as a source for bone marrow transplant later in childhood, but often there are not enough cells to use for a full grown adult. Since childhood cancer or aplastic anemia is so rare, the vast majority of times the cost is not worth it.

Dr. Tiffanie Noonan
Pediatrics 20 years experience
Cord blood banking..: provides stems cells that may be useful in research or for treating diseases that require stem cell transplants. There are public "banks" or private banks where you cord blood is reserved for the donating family if someone would ever need it. This service is available in India. I would advise that you educate yourself on the options so that you can make a decision that is best for your family.
