Osteoporosis: The reduction in calcium with osteoporosis increases the risk for fractures in all parts of the spine. Osteoporosis also increases the complexity of surgical repair by requiring the inclusion of more levels to spread the load and may also require cement to augment the pedicle screws. Healing time for the fracture or surgical fusion can also be much longer.
