Jaw dysfunction: Tmd is temporomandibular joint dysfunction/disorder. Usually the muscles of mastication (muscles that help you chew) become inflamed and can be very painful. There can also be inflammation around the joint itself, which can also be very painful and even cause ear aches. The cause is most often from a parafunctional habit, such as grinding your teeth.

Symptoms can fool yo: When i explain tmj/tmd to my patients, i tell them that everyone has TMJ (unless some type of mutation, cancer or accident.) TMJ is the anatomy of the jaw joints- (t) temporal bone on upper maxilla; (m) mandible- lower jaw; (j) joints- where the two meet in a complex of tendons, ligaments, etc. Tmd are the symptoms exhibited by someone who has a problem with the TMJ complex.

TMJ/TMD: The most common musculoskeletal disorder causing orofacial pain is a temporomandibular disorder. Noises from the TMJs are a symptom of dysfunction of these joints. See an orofacial pain practitioner for diagnosis and treatment if needed.
