A member asked:

Splinting of fracture needed in accidents and emergencies?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: In acute injuries fractures are commonly splinted to stabalize the injury until the swelling has gone down enough to put a cast on. If you put a cast on too early after a fracture in certain higher energy injuries the swelling has no where to go in a cast except in and squeeze the nerves and blood vessels. Therefore we splint in the beginning and cast after swelling has gone down.
