It happens: Could be, depepnds on your symptoms. There are tests you can have done, and many, many treatments, try a few opinions.

TMJ: What your dentist may have meant was the disk in your temporalmandibular joint may be displaced and not allowing the jaw to translate into different movements. Many times the disk can be pulled forward , folded or herniated. Arthritis can also change the shape of the bone that the disk rides along. Your dentist will probably be checking to make sure your bite is balanced and make a TMJ splint.
