Can you take 40mg prozac (fluoxetine) as needed?

Won't fix depression: Antidepressants all need to be taken on a regular daily basis to work as antidepressants. The usual daily dose of Prozac (fluoxetine) is 20 mg, but some people need more. Prozac is sometimes prescribed instead for pms symptoms, in which case it need not be taken continuously. The dosing is best discussed in person with the prescribing doctor.

Prozac (fluoxetine): No. Antidepressants need to be taken on a daily basis - as prescribed by your doctor - in order to gain full benefit from them.
