They can be off : Glucose meters can be off by about 15% and still be considered, "accurate". To determine accuracy, a glucometer can be tested against a lab glucose. The same blood sample would be applied to the meter as is sent to the lab concomitantly. If the metered sample is more than 15% off from the lab glucose a new meter should be considered.
