Do most surgeries utilize a nerve block?

No.: Some surgeries may be done under various types of blocks (called regional anesthetics) and some may not. Best to discuss with your anesthesiologist in the preoperative visit or with your surgeon. You might have a choice of a regional anesthetic or a general anesthetic, or a combination where the nerve block is used for postoperative pain control.

No: Nerve blocks are mostly used for surgery on the extremities and sometimes lower abdominal soft tissue. Spinal and epidural blocks can also be used for lower abdominal and perineal procedures.
