A member asked:

Is hypothyroidism something one is born with?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

It happens : Most cases if hypothyroidism occur as a result of autoimmune disease directed toward the thyroid gland. That is acquired. Congenital hypothyroidism is detected through newborn screening so that treatment can begin asap to avoid brain damage to the infant. Causes include defects in fetal pituitary/thyroid gland development, inability to make thyroid hormone, and some other rare genetic causes.
