Mist vs steam: There are products that generate a fine mist using tuning fork technology. People find these helpful in reducing the thickness of mucus their body makes during respiratory illnesses to allow them to come up easier. The old fashion steam kettle should be avoided as a burn risk. We don't use mustard poultices or surgery without anesthesia now either.
