COPD: If you smoke, particles of partially burned paper and tobacco leaves (tars) & carbon monoxide build up in your lungs. Over time, the breathing tubes & the alveolae thicken and fill with gooey fluid, decreasing the efficiency of gas exchange. So one becomes short of breath with minor activities since there's not much oxygen available to the blood. The best time to stop smoking is now.
