Cause unknown: We do not know the cause of cluster headaches. The diagnosis is usually clinical. Usually there is significant nasal congestion or a runny nose associated with increased lacrimation. The headaches can be quite severe and occur in clusters up to eight times a day. Usually multiple attacks are short-lived with excruciating one sided pain is typical.

Get the right meds!!: Pain from cluster headache is considered the worst pain that exists - for this reason they have been called "suicide" headaches. But, outstanding medications that can rapidly turn off this horrible pain exist. You must get to a headache doctor who really knows how to treat this disease - it is very different from migraines, etc. Options include oxygen, sumatriptan, verapamil, lithium, topiramate.

BAD headache: A cluster headache is a relatively rare type of headache characterized by brief attacks of excruciating pain behind one eye and autonomic symptoms (watery eyes, runny nose, sweating). These headaches occur in series (clusters) of 1-8 per day (often like clock-work) that last for weeks or months. Extremely painful!
