How dangerous is it to use antidepressants in pregnancy if you really struggle with depression?

Risk vs benefit: All antidepressants have potential risk for fetal development, but no specific problems have been identified. Depression can also lead to behavior that can have effects on the fetus. Psychotherapy would be a better option, but if depression is severe enough to cause poor self care or abusive behavior it is worth the risk. Talk to your doctor about how your depression effects you.

Not that dangerous: If you are the one who is pregnant and depressed, please consult with both your OB and a psychiatrist. You are at "advanced maternal age, " and already at high risk for problems with a baby. That said, there are a few antidepressants that have been used for years in pregnant women that are considered safe and effective. Depression can be damaging to the child.
