Too young 4 implants: Once your breast development is complete and stable for a year, breast augmentation is appropriate. You need parental consent under age 18, so this is a common "earliest" age for breast augmentation. Use of silicone gel implants under the age of 22 is considered "off-label" use by the fda, and requires full informed consent before consideration. See an abps-certified plastic surgeon. Dr. Tholen.

Damaging: The development of the breast. Also the patient may not be mentally prepared to understand all the lifetime risks of breast implants. They may only look at the short term benefits.

Side effects: Patients who have completed breast development and are 18 yrs of age (22 for gel) are considered "old enough" to have breast augmentation. Over the coming years women continue to change and the effects of gravity will also be important. Tissues can thin out and implants will eventually need to be replaced or revised. Much will depend on biologic variables which often are uncontrollable.

Frequent change?: There is a popular internet "belief" that implants should be replaced every 10 years but his has no basis in scientific validity. Saline & silicone implants have varying rupture rates cited from 3- 20% at 10 years. Gernerally my personal advice is to leave saline implants unless there is a reason to remove (rupture, exposure, contracture, size change or malposition). Silicone require MRI to assess.

Long term: Breast implants are indicated after age 18 for cosmetic augmentation. It is not to young for an adult woman to get breast implants as long as she is psychologically mature. Breast implants are long term devices that may have to be replaced, anticipate replacing them every 10-20 years. http://www.dassmd.com/breast-augmentation/index.html.
