Never normal: Blood in the stool is a warning sign that something has gone wrong, likely with the GI tract. The fresher looking the blood, the more likely the origin of bleeding is toward the end of the gut. Straining at stool can promote hemorrhoidal swelling & anal fissures--both of which may bleed. However, constipation may be a warning sign too & when associated with bleeding should prompt medical evaluation.
