Depends on type: While some cancers have a definitive genetic link many cancers do not and simply having a family history does not necessarily raise the risk. Ask again with the type of cancer that his father had maybe we can be more specific.

Depends on the ca: Some cancers are hereditary, ie. Seen more frequently if it runs in the family, like breast ca, colon ca, some gyn ca, etc. Some really have no genetic component, and strike out of the blue, wheras others like lung ca have obvious causes (smoking!) discuss with your doctor if you have specific concerns about your family.
