Likely muscle spasm: The movements of your neck are controlled by muscles. Arthritis, disc diseases/joint diseases can reduce the range of these movements, but the muscles control such movements--muscle spasm often makes a 'stiff" neck and at times can be quite painful. If you have radiating pain to arms etc..Likely a pinched nerve. Motrin/aleve, muscle-rubs may help. If worse, consult doc. Good luck.

Muscle Spasm/Inflamm: Most common cause of sudden onset stiffness and pain in the neck without headache and fever is due to a muscle spasm and/or inflammation. You should see yoyr doctor and may need anti inflammatory pain killers and/or muscle relaxants. But if you have fever and headache than it can be some thing serious.
