Good question: Most trainers will recommend stretching before exercise. There was a recent study however that looked at stretching before exercise. It found the most injuries in patients who did not stretch regularly but did for the study and patients that do stretch regularly but not for the study. The ones who do not stretch and the ones who do and stuck to their routine were least injured.

After: It is best to start off slow with a 5-10 minute warm up and to stretch well after exercise when the muscles are warmed up. This will help the muscle recovery and avoid tearing of the muscles which can occur if you stretch before exercise. Stretching after exercise has also been shown to improve performance.
