Furanocoumarins...: Are compounds present in grapefruit that inhibit certain enzymes (cyp3a4) that are important in the metabolism of drugs. Since they are inhibited, a higher dose of the drug ends up in the circulation, increasing the therapeutic effects, adverse effects, & toxicity. Caution is advised regarding tamsulosin (flomax) use, but no deaths have been reported.
