Elevated bilirubin: It is a common occurrence in newborns caused by elevated bilirubin (a chemical we all have in our bodies). Physiologic jaundice is generally of no concern. Your doctor should monitor and if your babies bilirubin becomes to high it can be treated by being placed under a light. It can not be prevented. There are less common forms of jaundice in newborns which your doctor can check.

Transition work: Before birth the mothers body cleans all the babies blood & that stops at birth. The babies liver must gear up to breakdown & recycle proteins from the blood that can produce jaundice. Many issues can cause a backup of work & increase the jaundice. Over time the liver catches up with the work & jaundice fades .If the level gets high various rx are used to help bring it down.
