Information!: Start with good sleep hygiene including a consistent bedtime, avoiding tv, computers, etc. In bedroom, and a comfortable sleep environment. If those aren't enough, there are a number of prescription meds that can be safe and effective, yet like all meds side effects are possible. Over the counter sleep aids can generally be used short term. Avoid alcohol for sleep it hurts more than helps.

Get evaluation: Best to get an evaluation of your sleep disturbance, because it may be more complicated than sleep alone. You could see your primary care physician first, and s/he could explore things with you. Could do any tests needed and/or refer you for other consultations & care. There are some herbal things like valerian, etc -- but those may not work -- & delay your understanding of "why" insomnia now.
