What's a "shunt" as far as the heart is concerned?

Artery & Vein Mix: The circulation is in two parts; the arterial (delivering blood rich in oxygen to the body) and the venous (returning blood to the heart and lungs to receive oxygen). There are not supposed to be any connections or short-cuts that "mix" them (a shunt). Shunts can be created for dialysis patients, or they can be congenital (present as a birth defect). Large shunts usually need to be repaired.
