What age do you have to be to get laser eye surgery?

Mostly after 23: The eye is changing in a not totally predictable way prior to age 23 so to avoid re-lasik surgery, most avoid surgery on anyone younger than this. In special cases younger patients may be considered and even a few children have been done but these are exceptions.

Legally 18, but...: A consenting adult over the age of 18 can have lasik. Custom lasik is only fda approved over 21. There is some research ongoing for lasik in the pediatric group for medical reasons.

18 to 21 years old: A person's eye must have a stable refraction/prescription before refactive surgery, regardless of age. Children have growing and changing prescriptions until adulthood, generally stable by 18 to 21 years of age.

Contraindications: Patients whose refraction is not stable, whose corneas are too thin or are irregular on topography, pregnant patients, patients with uncontrolled diabetes or glaucoma and patients on certain prescription medications such as amiodarone are not good candidates. Also, patients with other eye conditions such as cataract or macular degeneration should not have this surgery. Discuss with your eye md.

How can it feel to get laser eye surgery?

Different: You will not feel pain since your eyes will be anesthetized. You will feel the sensation of the surgeon moving the flap if you are undergoing lasik. You will see an array of lights while the laser is treating you eye.
