A member asked:

How many different types of hiv antibody tests are there?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Probably 4.: There are 4 known ways of testing for HIV and probably more being developed. Initial testing is by elisa (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), and if positive, confirmed by western blot or immunofluorescence assay (ifa). Less often, nucleic acid testing can help in diagnosis, but can be inconclusive due to insufficient sample, so another is collected and tested.
