Initial testing is by elisa (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), and if positive, confirmed by western blot or immunofluorescence assay (ifa). Less often, nucleic acid testing can help in diagnosis, but can be inconclusive due to insufficient sample, so another is collected and tested.
