Yes: It is true that you can die of copd. The leading cause of death however across all stages of the disease is coronary artery disease (ie heart attack). Most patients that die of COPD die of a complication such ad penumonia or pulmonary embolism.

Copd: Severe COPD can cause acute exacerbations and can cause respiratory failure some time and can be the cause of death, especially if you have acute exacerbation with infection.
