Smoking & pollutants: Smoking and inhaling pollutants are common causes of copd. There are genetically linked conditions that can also cause COPD in people who do not smoke or work in a high pollutant environment. Medically it is an inflammatory condition that produces large amounts of mucus and causes the lungs to lose their elasticity.
