See a specialist: If you have been diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia then treatment of your tmd may be difficult and may require you to see a specialist in facial pain disorders or neurologist. If the neuralgia is from a different nerve then you should see a dentist to address the tmd and another doctor can treat the neuralgia separately. Most tmd's can be treated successfully with bite splints. Good luck.

Get treatment: Try to find a dentist or oral surgeon that has experience in treating tmj/tmd disorders.

A suggestion: Symptoms may be related, or not related. Start with advice from TMJ expert. Any dentist can be a TMJ expert with the proper training and experience. Most commonly, oral surgeons, prosthodontists, and orofacial pain specialists. Ask your MD, your dentist and your dental society for referrals.

See OFP specialist: Any TMJ must be viewed as a valid medical disorder and the TMJ assessment must be comprehensive. See Orofacial Pain specialist for evaluation, tests, imaging and treatment options.
