A member asked:

How can i differentiate between tmj flare up and trigeminal neuralgia? if heat seems to make my tmj worst... is that an indication its something else causing my jaw pain?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Here's difference: Trigeminal neuralgia is a sudden intense lancinating immobilizing sharp pain lasting a few seconds Attacks occur numerous times daily and are consistently in same focal area on one side of face. Although TMJ discomfort can fluctuate, the pain is not typically sudden or paroxysmal. Suggest dental consult with oral surgeon if this is deteriorating. TMJ is not paroxysmal nor sudden.
