Neuropathy: Muscles atrophy for a number of reasons. They can atrophy from malnutrition. They can atrophy from diseases that affect the central and peripheral nervous systems. In the case of diabetes, the most common cause of atrophy is the development of peripheral neuropathy which damages the nerves mainly in the legs but can also affect the arms. This causes loss of sensation, pain and sometimes atrophy.
