Can be many causes.: Your doctor can explore the history and details of this cough, but many things can cause it, including repeated viral colds, asthma, allergies, reflux, whooping cough, etc.. Recommend that you visit your doctor and go through a thorough history and exam.

Many thoughts: Does he have asthma? Has he been wheezing? Has he inhaled any foreign object like popcorn or the like? Does he have allergies? Has he been treated for any respiratory illnesses. Any exposures to chronically ill people. A persistent cough should have a work up. See your pcp. May need an x-ray, pulm. Function testing, allergy w/u and further testing and treatment.
