Bad, But an Easy Fix: Teeth clenching/grinding at night will never stop. It may reduce in periods of calm, but it will be worse in periods of stress/anxiety. This pattern in your brain stem is permanent. Over time, it will wreak havoc on your teeth and joints. You should see a dentist for a professional nightguard--an oral appliance to protect your teeth. This will also help you sleep better. It's a great investment.

Need a night guard: If you continue your bruxing without treatment the prognosis is poor as you will continue to wear down your teeth as well as cause other problems. See your dentist so he can construct a custom night guard to prevent the ill effects of grinding.

Causes: Bruxism can be due to medication side effects, oromandibular dystonia, stress, sleep disorder untreated, anxiety disorders, or bipolar disorder (manic, hypomanic, or mixed states). Eliminating the causal medication for the first, accurately assessing dystonia and treatment with muscle relaxants the second, buspirone for anxiety, and appropriate mood stabilizers for the latter. Antipsychotics no.
