Keep safe: First priority is to prevent self-harm. Second is to figure out cause of depression and start treatment. Encouragement to stay socially active and participate in group activities means there will be less opportunity to isolate and ruminate. Behavioral observations are helpful to figure out impact of depression on daily living. Initiation of treatment can resolve the most pressing symptoms.

Medication: During inpatient hospitalizations medication can also be titrated quicker compared to the outpatient setting, since you are under 24 hour supervision.
