Hydraulic Expansion: Angio=blood (blood vessel in this case); plasty=physical change /remolding of tissue. In angioplasty, a flexible guidewire, typically 0.014" diameter, is threaded through an area to be expanded. Over this guidewire, a balloon catheter (engineered plastic tube device) +/-stent is slid into the area & expanded using pressures 60-250 times usual blood pressure, deflated & then balloon & wire removed.
