Infection/absorption: The most common concerns are infection, electrolytes, and metabolic bone disease. The stomach acid kills bacteria. Less acid may cause GI infections and pneumonia (from reflux into the lungs). Decreasing acid may cause malabsorption leading to changes in the blood salts (electrolytes). Malabsorption of calcium can lead to osteoporosis. Multiple polyps can also occur.
