Amalgam removal: You want to use lots of water when you remove an amalgam. This keeps things from building up heat. You also want high speed suction to remove everything. Some people like to put on a rubber dam to keep things isolated. These are the needed things.

High speed suction: As long as high speed suction is used during the procedure there should not be any problem removing an amalgam filling. I would recommend safety glasses worn by the patient as well.

Beliefs vary: I would recommend that you see an accredited member of the international academy of oral medicine and toxicology. Take a look at their web site, www.Iaomt.Org and you will find dentist who have completed their training with the academy and are accredited by iaomt. I am accredited by the academy and routinely follow their protocols.

Mercury safe : 1) anesthetize 2) latex free dam & goggles 3) high quality strong dental suction-dental assistant in control 4) oxygen for patient to breathe 5) dentist electric drill - high torque & slower speed. Plenty of water spray to reduce heat build which causes mercury vapor release 6) chunk out filling -do not just drill it out 7) office amalgam separator 8) once removed, remove dam, thorough rinse.
