Usually not: Most bunion surgeries can be performed without pins. Usually screw fixation is used and it can remain in the foot. I perform most of my bunion surgeries using absorbable screws. They dissolve over time. Discuss options with your surgeon. Dr l.

Pin removal: The removal requires a second small surgery so there could be a bit of pain but it will not last long.

Some bunion : Surguries are done with the pin sticking out of the foot, others where it is buried under the skin. When sticking out, they typically do not hurt to be removed, and when they are buried you are given local anesthesia so that you will not feel anything when the skin is incised.

Very little!: Pin removal is usually a pretty easy, uncomplicated process. It's done in the office and after several weeks the pins are "ready" to come out, meaning your surgeon doesn't have to work very hard to remove them, and it shouldn't cause you too much pain. Discomfort from pin removal is usually gone within a day!

Should not be bad.: The pin removal is usually not very painful. If needed, the doctor can give you a little anesthetic before the removal.
