Great question!: The lining of the stomach is protected by mucus secreted by stomach cells that forms a border that protects the stomach from the acid. The mucus contains many factors including buffers to neutralize the acid before it burns the stomach wall. That is the theory behind how Aspirin causes stomach bleeding. It decreases this mucus leaving the stomach unprotected and the acid burns it --> bleeding.
