Remove mercury fill: You should removed the mercury amalgam filings when they are starting breakdown. If they have recurrent decay underneath them, or if you have a sensitivity to metals. I would suggest replacing them with something other than amalgam, but that is my personal opinion.

Ask your dentist: It's best to check with your dentist. It is hard to evaluate an amalgam on your own. The mercury risk is one you need to decide for yourself. There are very strong opinions on both sides, but most objective studies show it's safety for the majority of the population. It is also the most durable, inexpensive material available.

Yes: We know mercury is not a healthful substance. That aside, it is not good for your teeth. It differs from your tooth physically, so it promotes tooth fractures. Even if they don't hurt, small fractures should be managed. New, biomimetic approaches rebuild the natural tooth strength from the inside out. Use resin for small fillings, porcelain for larger ones, preventing the need for crowns later.
