Is it recommended to do squats and deadlifts barefoot or in slippers?

Neither: If you drop a weight on your foot you will be very sorry that you didn't have the proper support from your athletic shoe. They are also rubber and will give you the ability to prevent slipping.

I would avoid: Lifting barefoot. There are weightlifting shoes that provide traction and have minimal cushion in the soles to allow for improved stability/feel of the foot with the lifting floor/surface. They are similar to wrestling shoes or boxing shoes/boots.
