Preoccupation: If your worry is getting in the way of your life you need to wonder if it might be excessive. All of us deal with uncertainty (i might have cancer now) all the time, but for some of us that worry gets in the way of having a life. So that you might as well be sick. In fact some people with hypochondriasis report they actually feel relief when they discover an illness (usually unrelated).

Agree w Dr. Forster: Is a great deal of your energy, time and anxiety focused on fears about medical problems that you have not been diagnosed with? Hypochondria is now called health anxiety disorder. It occurs when a person becomes obsessed with the idea that they have serious medical problems /condition (when there is no diagnosed condition).
